After 5 minutes, can you trust your gut?

conjunctivitis

It’s a weird feeling… not the conjunctivitis I caught in late May, but you know the one; where within 5 minutes of meeting someone you either like them or not. There’s not too much of a problem if you like them because you can just continue talking to them, trading stories, exchanging ideas or cracking jokes. But, it’s when you don’t like them after 5 minutes and you still have to keep talking to them that makes it difficult.

I was introduced to someone at work today and it was almost unbearable to continue talking to the person – let’s call this person Dr. J. It could’ve been Dr. J’s patronizing attitude and giving orders to whoever crossed Dr. J’s path, or it could’ve been the Dr.’s complete disregard for other people’s ideas and experiences. It made me cringe when I introduced the Dr. to one of my colleagues. After 2 seconds of meeting my colleague, the Dr. started to give my colleague orders! And they don’t even work in the same office. In this case, I was polite enough to wait for the meeting to end… but it really made me not want to work with the Dr. I mean, what would you do if you just met someone and they gave you really bad vibes?

Anyway, here are a few photos to recap the pass month… I’ve been too busy at work to provide weekly updates.

Aileu

For a friends birthday in early June, we went to Aileu, Dili’s neighboring district. Most of the people who went for the picnic were French… so we enjoyed good food, wine and fois gras!

Beach day

Now that the rainy season is over, people are heading to the beach and staying most of the day. We decided to have brunch on the beach, it’s something I need to do more often.

Maubara markets

Last weekend, there was a beach craft fair to promote locally produced goods… not only was it nice to get out of Dili to Maubara, about 50 kms west, but it was nice to interact and support the locals.

Maubara beach

Maubara beach – this is looking from where they had the ‘beach fair’… definitely a good spot.
