Of course, there are the technophiles who just loved to keep up-to-date on things, but outside of the UN, and other office&#8217;s, basic internet connection is very limited so staying in touch is a little challenging&#8230; although that is changing as <a title=\"TT\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timortelecom.tp\/eng\/index_uk.html\" target=\"_blank\">Timor Telecom<\/a> and <a title=\"iNet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inet.tp\/\" target=\"_blank\">iNet<\/a>, the two main internet service providers, get their act together.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s a good thing that the Internet, social networking, and all these other techie stuff is a bit slow to catch on&#8230; I don&#8217;t think these guys in the photo on this construction site near where I live will be &#8220;twittering&#8221; or &#8220;updating their facebook&#8221; if they get in a jam.<\/p>\n<p>I just came across this article and it&#8217;s crazy how people are addicted to Facebook, Twitter, etc&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Source: http:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/09\/07\/trapped-girls-facebook\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trapped Girls Updated Facebook Status Instead of Calling For Help<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Too much social media can be a bad thing. Two girls lost in a stormwater drain in Adelaide, Australia, updated their <span class=\"blippr-nobr\">Facebook <\/span>status instead of calling emergency services on Sunday night, in a situation authorities called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153worrying\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not clear how much danger the 10- and 12-year old girls were in: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/stories\/2009\/09\/07\/2678945.htm\">Australia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ABCNews<\/a> describes them as both \u00e2\u20ac\u0153lost\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153trapped\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s possible that they felt no imminent danger. Nonetheless, the Metropolitan Fire Service expressed concern that the youngsters, equipped with phones, would raise the alarm on Facebook rather than calling 000, the Australian equivalent of 911:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The 10- and 12-year-old girls updated a Facebook status to say they were lost in a drain on Honeypot Road at Hackham in Adelaide\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s southern suburbs on Sunday night. Glenn Benham from the MFS says it was fortunate a young friend was online at the time and was able to call for help for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It is a worry for us because it causes a delay on us being able to rescue the girls,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If they were able to access Facebook from their mobile phones, they could have called 000, so the point being they could have called us directly and we could have got there quicker than relying on someone being online and replying to them and eventually having to call us via 000 anyway.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not the first time social media has been used in place of an emergency call: in Atlanta, Georgia in May 2009, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emsresponder.com\/web\/online\/Top-EMS-News\/Atlanta-Councilman-Chooses-Twitter-Over-911-to-Report-Emergency\/1$9546\">councilman was concerned<\/a> that his cellphone battery would be flat by the time a 911 call connected.
