{"id":3964,"date":"2014-07-03T14:40:48","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T12:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vincentfung.ca\/blog\/?p=3964"},"modified":"2014-07-15T17:16:15","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T15:16:15","slug":"designing-a-logo-is-like-giving-birth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vincentfung.ca\/blog\/archives\/3964","title":{"rendered":"Designing a logo is like giving&nbsp;birth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Working at the United Nations, there&#8217;s a tendency to relegate design to &#8220;making things pretty&#8221; or as a last resort in a communication plan, where presentation and usability (i.e. design) take a backseat in a lot of cases to other more &#8220;important&#8221; work. When in actual fact, having a clear plan, strategy, content and design are all one in the same where each part has a purpose. For example, having great content doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean people will pay attention, and designing something without content and knowledge (&#8220;the meat&#8221;) just doesn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vincentfung.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1150365.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3976\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vincentfung.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1150365.jpg\" alt=\"P1150365\" width=\"1000\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vincentfung.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1150365.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.vincentfung.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P1150365-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Design is about how something looks and functions, as well as a way of thinking that can impact our lives &#8211; look at how the above photo of the ribbed vault in the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.abbayedesenanque.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abbayedesenanque.com\/\">Abbaye Notre-Dame de S\u00e9nanque<\/a> is both beautiful and functional or watch the below interview with graphic designer Michael Bierut on his mentor Massimo Vignelli and logo design.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;What people don&#8217;t understand, and I think some designers don&#8217;t understand, designers only make a vessel to hold things that have to be filled in over time&#8230; It&#8217;s just a newborn, it doesn&#8217;t know nothing. We don&#8217;t even really know what&#8217;s it&#8217;s going to look like when it grows up.
