Going up 50+ floors to the top of the State Tower will definitely make you a believer. Ken, Takako (Muriel’s friend from Japan), Muriel and I decided to check out the view from Sirocco, one of Bangkok’s most “up” scale (pardon the pun) bars. Flip flops, shorts, backpacks and sports wear are definitely not allowed up here.

(Once in a while you just need a martini)

It’s a miracle that I was able to get through the scrutiny of the fashion police at the bottom of the escalators. I mean, most of the stuff they listed as unacceptable is a majority of what I own. Entering the elevator and riding the 50+ floors, we arrived at the top of the State Tower. This supposedly high-class building was deteriorating and full of squatters about 3 years ago when I was last in Thailand. Funny how things change so quickly here. I wonder what the customers would think if they knew this?

(Striking a pose over the City of Angels)

The average costs of drinks at Sirocco are equal to about the 2-3 day wage of the average Thai person (approx $10 Canadian). It’s nice to get up here but I feel a little guilty drinking 300Baht drinks – the cost of one drink can practically feed me for a day. But it was an experience and its probably only in Bangkok and cities like it where some average Joe can live-it-up since this would be out of the question back home.

(Chilling out and people watching at the bar in Sirocco)

(The bridge and platform design for the bar on the 54th floor of the State Tower) Sitting on top of Bangkok is an amazing experience. If you’ve never been to a roof top bar, I highly recommend, if only just once. Could it be that Bangkok is a beautiful city?
